eXXe25

More compact. Lighter. Further developed.

With the eXXe25, nicknamed “Shorty,” E-Traxx continued the systematic development of its own electric race car. The focus was particularly on weight reduction, more compact packaging, and the optimization of existing vehicle designs.

Shorty presented the team with major technical challenges during the 2024–25 season. At the same time, the eXXe25 led to important developments and insights that laid the foundation for the next generation of vehicles.

Weight Reduction: Consistent Use of Lightweight Construction

A key focus during the development of the eXXe25 was weight optimization. The aerodynamics package, first introduced with the eXXe24, served as an important starting point for this effort. Weighing 9.2 kg, it also offered potential for further optimization. For the Shorty, the concept was therefore refined with the goal of reducing weight and further improving the overall performance of the vehicle.

Aerodynamics: Further Improvements in Efficiency

The aerodynamics were also further refined for the eXXe25. The focus was on the front, rear, and underbody, as well as how they interact with the rest of the vehicle. At the same time, the cooling of relevant components was incorporated into the design. As a result, the experience gained from the team’s first in-house aerodynamics package was directly applied to the development of the Shorty.

Drive: More Power and Excitement

The electric powertrain concept for the eXXe25 has been fundamentally redesigned. Instead of the previous 440-V system, the Shorty was engineered around a 600-V battery concept. Two high-performance EMRAX 188 motors transmit their power to the drive shaft via chain drives. This was intended to increase both the available power and the efficiency of the powertrain.

Frame: Lightweight Construction Meets Stability

The vehicle frame was also further developed for Shorty. As with its predecessor, it was designed and manufactured entirely by the team. Adjustments to the design and manufacturing process were aimed at reducing weight even further while ensuring the vehicle’s necessary stability.

Lessons Learned

The development of the eXXe24 provided the team with numerous insights that were directly incorporated into the Shorty. The frame manufacturing process, in particular, highlighted just how crucial precision is for the final vehicle. For the eXXe25, therefore, templates were specifically used to reduce warping during manufacturing.

The team was also able to draw on its experience with carbon fiber components and the aerodynamics package—which was used for the first time—in the new generation of vehicles. This made “Shorty” an important next step in the team’s development.

Saison 2025

The 2025 season took E-Traxx to Formula Student Netherlands in Assen and to Formula Student Germany at the Hockenheimring. For Shorty, however, the season did not go as planned: Technical issues with the battery prevented the car from competing at the events.

Despite this challenge, the team was able to gain valuable experience and end the season with a special achievement. At Formula Student Germany, E-Traxx took third place in the Business Plan Presentation—a significant milestone for the entire team.

The insights gained from the development and the season with the eXXe25 also served as an important foundation for further work on the next generation of vehicles.
